The Tao of Art Therapy: A Zen Brushwork Approach

This research employed a qualitative study to explore the Taoist approach to art therapy through Zen brushwork. Many ancient ink paintings and calligraphy pieces describe how people in the past cultivated a state of well-being in pursuit of mental health. Using an art as therapy approach, a Taoist-Zen practice involves meditative and spontaneous creation of art. The study investigates the lived experiences of individuals in the group using a hermeneutic phenomenological framework for data analysis. Through thematic analysis, themes emerged, reflecting the essence of the participants' experiences. Findings highlight the numerous benefits of art therapy in supporting individuals to heightened mindfulness and self-awareness, promoting self-expression and emotional release, gaining insight and personal growth, engaged sensory embodiment, and cultural enrichment. The art group allows individuals a safe and supportive environment to delve into self-care through ink brushwork. This study enhances our understanding of how Zen brushwork can be effectively integrated into therapeutic contexts.
