The Board of Directors for KATIA governs the Institute and they are committed to the purpose and mission statement of the Association. The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute Association board of directors operates by consensus decision-making and students are well represented on the board. KATI is active in promoting art therapy both regionally and nationally. The involvement and support of the Board is significant in keeping with the community-minded philosophy of the school and provides the energy for the many activities that are involved in the successful operation of the program. KATI has a yearly retreat day for the board, staff, instructors and student representatives. The retreat day is an opportunity to evaluate strengths of the program and to brainstorm new directions and developments.
KATIA is a community-based society and serves the wider community by providing art therapy services and networking with local agencies and educational institutions. The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute has hosted both national and provincial art therapy conferences. Workshops, summer school courses and mini-conferences are offered through each school year. We bring in noted art therapists from across Canada and around the world.
The Institute is also very involved in integrating art therapy in a number of different areas. An example of the kind of community work that we do is sponsoring and facilitating art making in the park for the Relay for Life, fundraiser for the Cancer Society. We have had a number of projects ranging from making some large ‘Cancer fighting dragons’ out of recycled materials to simple kites that can take special thoughts to those who have died of cancer.
