Do I need to have a car to get around Nelson?

You are not required to have a car, although having one can be helpful. Nelson has a full bus service as well as the handyDART (special needs transportation service). If you are planning to be in Nelson without a car, you will need to think carefully about where you choose to live and how frequently the bus runs. There are optional clinical placements that are not serviced by the bus, although students often carpool to get to placements. See BC Transit for information on Nelson’s bus service: www.bctransit.com/choose-transit-system. Nelson also has Kootenay Carshare Cooperative with more than a dozen cars and trucks available for members use. The sign up fee is $500 for a lifetime membership; however, this is refundable after a minimum 6 months membership if you leave Nelson after you graduate. You can find more information here.
