608 - Adult Art Therapy & Mental Health

3 credits / 30 hours

This course explores a trauma informed approach to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness within the context of art therapy practice. The course includes an orientation to cultural complexities regarding health, illness, psychopathology and the therapeutic relationship. Students will have the opportunity to explore in depth two mental health diagnoses through the format of a professional adult mental health presentation grounded in current research and a creative presentation based on either personal experience or imagined experience. Students will become familiar with the DSM 5 and its application and develop critical thinking skills in relation to both its value and limitations.
